App Store Optimization Basics for Hyper-Casual Games
By Plarmes
App store optimization, or ASO, is search engine optimization for app stores. Players type a query, the store ranks the results, and a small set of signals decides which games they see. For a small studio with no marketing budget, ASO is one of the cheapest discovery channels available.
Use the words players search for
Titles and subtitles carry the most weight for search. Use terms players actually type, such as "one tap game" or "brain teaser," and keep the title readable. A title that is only a brand name gives the store nothing to match. Arrow Cube: Slide Puzzle and BrainBeam: Laser Puzzle both pair a brand name with a plain genre term for exactly this reason.
Write the short description like a headline
On stores that show a short description, the first line does most of the persuading. Lead with the core action: "Tap at the right moment to stack as high as you can" tells a player more than a vague claim about fun.
Screenshots sell the first few seconds
Most players decide from the first two or three screenshots. Show the mechanic in action, add one short caption per image that names the idea, and keep the visual style consistent.
Localize the basics
Translating the title, subtitle, and captions into the languages your audience uses can lift discovery in those markets. Start with two or three languages rather than translating everything at once.
Change one thing at a time
ASO feedback is slow. Change one element, wait a few weeks, and compare impressions and conversion rate in the store console. Changing the title, icon, and screenshots in the same week makes it impossible to tell what helped.
